SINGAPORE -- The recent closure of The Cathay Cineplex was the latest milestone in the realignment of the movie theater industry in Singapore, home to a large population of film buffs.

The theater ceased to operate on June 26 after entertaining moviegoers for about 80 years. The closure was attributed to causes common in the movie industry's slump around the world: the increased popularity of video streaming services and the coronavirus pandemic.
