PALO ALTO, California -- Sony Group is expanding its music rights holdings, including through acquiring a 50% stake in Michael Jackson's music catalog, as it seeks to create synergies with its movie and game businesses.

Sony Music Publishing has been buying the catalogs of globally popular musicians like Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen. A U.S. trade magazine reported that it spent more than $600 million for half of Michael Jackson's discography in a deal that closed late last year.
