SEOUL/TOKYO -- South Korean internet giants Naver and Kakao are jockeying for the lead in Japan's comics app market, aiming to use the country as a steppingstone to the greater global market as their growth at home is limited by a small population.

Naver's Line Manga topped a 2022 comics app usage survey in Japan by Tokyo-based research company Mobile Marketing Data Labo. It was used by 33% of respondents, with multiple responses allowed. Kakao's Piccoma came in second at 30%.
