TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus has developed a midsize truck using a smaller truck's platform, saving on development expenses and production costs.
Based on the platform of the Canter light-duty truck, the new midsize truck can carry up to 8.55 tons. The frame has been strengthened to accommodate larger loads. And the truck itself is powered by the same 3-liter engine as the Canter, smaller than the company's 5- and 7-liter engines for midsize models.
In addition to regular shipping companies, Mitsubishi Fuso sees the new truck being used by customers to transport such bulky items as scaffolding for construction sites.
The new truck will be produced at the company's Kawasaki plant and at a manufacturing subsidiary in Portugal. Mitsubishi Fuso recently released it in Europe. Down the road, sales of this global strategic vehicle will be expanded to such industrialized countries as Australia and possibly Japan.
Mitsubishi Fuso plans to introduce new vehicles, including this truck, and products in fields it has not previously entered in 50 countries and regions during 2014. It aims to boost worldwide sales by 15% from 2012 levels to more than 200,000 units in 2015.
