Mitsubishi Heavy forges shipbuilding and engineering companies

Revamp of infrastructure segment intended to clarify responsibilities

The Nagasaki Shipyard will form the core of a new Mitsubishi Heavy shipbuilding unit.

TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries will debut three companies that take over the operations of the Japanese group's industry and infrastructure segment on Jan. 1, under a restructuring announced Friday.

Two of the companies will handle commercial shipbuilding, while the third oversees engineering operations. Creating the three companies helps Mitsubishi Heavy clarify responsibilities and make choices among separate areas of business.
