TOKYO -- Japanese insurer Nippon Life Insurance is going on the offensive more strongly than ever, following the bitter experience of being overtaken by rival The Dai-ichi Life Insurance as No. 1 in premium revenues in fiscal 2014. It was the first time in the postwar era that the company had lost the crown.
Ripples are spreading through financial markets as Nippon Life, under its slogan of the "biggest and best" life insurer, is venturing into new territory, such as selling foreign-currency insurance products and acquiring operators of independent insurance agencies, known as "insurance shops."
