TOKYO -- The deal announced Monday between Nissan Motor and Renault reworks the Japanese-French alliance for an era in which automakers need to consider more than just expansion as they pick their partners.

Under the deal, Renault will cut its stake in Nissan to 15%, putting the capital relationship on an equal footing, and Nissan will invest in Renault's planned electric vehicle and software venture.
