TOKYO -- Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical Group has taken steps toward selling subsidiary Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma, rethinking its position in the R&D-intensive pharmaceutical sector to free up funds for its slumping chemical business.

The chemical maker has reportedly retained a mergers and acquisitions advisory firm and approached foreign funds about a sale. Negotiations are believed to be in the initial stages.
