Rakuten to let golfers test out drone delivery

Rakuten drones will deliver orders at a golf course.

TOKYO -- Rakuten will use drones to deliver beverages and other items at a golf course in Japan starting next month, a step toward expanding their use to e-commerce delivery.

The virtual mall operator said Monday that it will launch the service May 9 at the Camel Golf Resort in Chiba Prefecture. A user will place an order for snacks, golf balls or other items via smartphone and receive them at a designated receiving spot within the golf course. Smartphones' location function will be used to have the order ready when the golfer arrives at the spot.
