Top chains Woolworths and Coles face scrutiny as prices rise

SYDNEY -- In regular ads filled with images of happy families and enthusiastic staff, Australia's two biggest supermarkets, Woolworths -- better known as "Woolies" -- and Coles, like to tout their fresh produce and low prices.

But as the cost of living rises, the rival chains, which comprise more than 60% of the supermarket sector, have increasingly had their consumer-friendly claims challenged by allegations they abuse their powerful position.
