OSAKA -- Department stores across the Osaka area enjoyed a rise in tax-free sales during China's National Day holidays this year, even as Chinese tourist traffic continues to fall short of pre-pandemic levels.

Tax-free sales at the Daimaru Shinsaibashi department store for the week through Monday rose nearly 30% compared to the National Day holidays in 2019, and 4% from 2023. Jewelry and cosmetics were among the most popular items for Chinese shoppers, according to the store.
