MUMBAI -- Reliance Industries, one of India's major conglomerates, is on its way to establishing retail as its second business pillar, with its latest leap in that direction being the opening of a shopping mall that caters to the ultrawealthy in a nation that is far down the global scale of per capita gross domestic product.

All the glitz and glamour of the mall's bespoke jewelry boutiques and ultra-luxe luggage labels might also be just the opportunity that Muji, a minimalist chain from Japan, has been searching for to strike it big in India.
