NEW YORK -- A few steps from Uniqlo's flagship store in Manhattan, sister company GU is opening a pop-up shop -- its first step outside Asia to try to become a global brand.

"We need to accelerate, to globalize ourselves. We have an aim to become the global, 1 trillion yen ($6.9 billion) fashion brand," said GU CEO Osamu Yunoki.
