Services offer Apple new path as hardware loses shine

Apple CEO Tim Cook

SILICON VALLEY -- Apple is turning toward enterprise software and premium content as the market for its devices plateaus, combining the U.S. tech giant's brand power and strong hardware base with a services-oriented business model to keep growing.

When sales in primary markets begin to slow, emerging economies are often the next place companies turn. Such was the case in mid-May, when Apple CEO Tim Cook embarked on a four-day visit to India. The trip included a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and an announcement that Apple will set up a development center in the country. "Already looking forward to next visit," the CEO told Modi via Twitter following their talk.
