Singtel offers Inmarsat broadband on cargo ships

Singtel says it has installed Inmarsat's Fleet Xpress, high-speed internet system for shipping industry, for the first time.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore Telecommunications, the city-state's largest telecom provider, announced on Wednesday it completed its first commercial installation of Fleet Xpress, a high-speed broadband service offered by British mobile satellite company Inmarsat.

The system was installed on a container ship operated by K Line Ship Management Singapore, a local unit of Japan's Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha. The broadband connection will be used to monitor and analyze engine performance and fleet management to improve operational efficiency. The ship's crew will also be able to enjoy faster internet connectivity at sea.
