Slimmed-down Sony seeks new era of growth

Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai.

TOKYO -- Sony's sale of its money-losing battery business marks the end of a yearslong structural overhaul and the beginning of what the Japanese company hopes is a new phase of growth, one that will require it to do more with services and connected technology.

Chief Financial Officer Kenichiro Yoshida on Tuesday declared in essence that Sony's restructuring was complete. Presenting results for the April-September half, Yoshida said that the company will review operations in light of changes in the business environment but that it had no plans at this point for new disposals.
