TOKYO/PALO ALTO, California/LONDON -- Japanese tech investor SoftBank Group began negotiations with OpenAI to acquire up to $25 billion in additional shares of the ChatGPT developer, Nikkei has learned.

This is a part of the $500 billion investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure in the U.S., which was announced on Jan. 21 along side President Donald Trump, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and others. The investment is planned over the next four years.
