Sompo Japan eyes new profit source as insurance market shrinks

TOKYO -- Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Holdings' planned acquisition of nursing care company Message Co. is aimed at firming its foothold in a growth field to compensate for contraction in the nonlife insurance market as Japan's population ages.

The insurer seeks to become a comprehensive provider of services related to safety, security and health, an executive said. It recently acquired nursing care company Watami no Kaigo, now Sompo Care Next. It has also joined hands with Sohgo Security Services, also known as Alsok, and a home remodeling business.
