BERLIN -- Sony plans to develop robots that can be used in applications beyond the household, the company's chief executive said Friday here at Europe's biggest electronics expo.

People often imagine humanoid androids or animal-shaped automatons when they think of robots, CEO Kazuo Hirai told reporters at IFA 2016. Sony's robots will perform a variety of functions, including applications in manufacturing and nursing care. The machines will be loaded with various robotic and artificial intelligence capabilities, and the lineup will include drones and similar products, Hirai said.
