South Korean financial giant invests in digital currency exchange

TOKYO -- South Korean financial giant KB Financial Group has invested 1.5 billion won, or about $1.33 million, in Coinplug, a Seoul-based bitcoin exchange. Coinplug owns 12 patents on blockchain, a core technology used in the virtual currency, the highest number of such patents in the country.

KB Financial Group bought Coinplug's redeemable convertible preferred shares through its subsidiary KB Investment and became the first South Korean financial institution that invested in a bitcoin exchange. With the investment, it aims to get a head start in "fintech," a new field that combines finance and technology.
