TOKYO Gaming startups across Southeast Asia are taking a cue from Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings and branching out beyond games, an approach that is helping reel in users and woo investors.
THE GARENA EXAMPLE At a gaming cafe in downtown Singapore, young people are absorbed in "League of Legends," the online multiplayer battle title that has attracted some 100 million enthusiasts worldwide. Garena Interactive Holding, a locally based company, has the regional distribution rights for the global hit, as well as for other popular PC and smartphone games.
