TSMC expects to beat Intel in server chip technology in 2017

Mark Liu, co-chief executive of TSMC, expects his company to bring 7-nanometer chips -- which will power a new generation of powerful servers -- to market in 2018, ahead of Intel in the U.S.

HSINCHU, Taiwan -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker with 55% of the global market, will be first to produce 7-nanometer chips, according to a senior executive, pulling the company ahead of Intel, the world's top semiconductor company which dominates the server market.

Co-Chief Executive Mark Liu, said TSMC will manufacture 7-nanometer chips in small quantities from early 2017, and go into mass production in the first quarter of 2018. TSMC expects to be ahead of Intel throughout, the first time the Taiwanese company acknowledges its leadership in advanced chip technology.
