Takata's search for turnaround sponsor sputters

Takata Chief Financial Officer Yoichiro Nomura, left, leads an April-September earnings briefing Friday.

TOKYO -- Takata has struggled to find a sponsor for its business turnaround as none of the potential suitors seems to offer exactly what the embattled autoparts maker is looking for in a white knight.

The company, whose defective air bags have led to recalls in the tens of millions, reported a jump in operating profit for the April-September half. "We managed to achieve profit growth despite a stronger yen," Chief Financial Officer Yoichiro Nomura told reporters Friday.
