TOKYO -- The Asahi Kasei group has created a chip that will allow automotive systems to better detect whether a baby has been left unattended inside, hoping to start mass production as early as October amid a tightening of rules worldwide to prevent accidental deaths, Nikkei has learned.

Developed by subsidiary Asahi Kasei Microdevices, the AK5818 chip uses millimeter waves to detect objects. Canadian startup Pontosense is providing expertise on detection methods.
