TOKYO -- Canon on Thursday unveiled a high-performance image sensor meant for vehicles, as the company tries to grab a piece of the growing market for onboard equipment used in self-driving cars.

The sensor can detect distant pedestrians on roads even in the dead of night by measuring tiny bits of light.
