TOKYO -- Japanese chipmaker Rapidus is drawing generous government support for its ambitious project to manufacture advanced semiconductors, but securing private-sector funding remains a challenge.

Learning from the supply chain disruptions caused by the global pandemic, the Japanese government has spent heavily on bolstering the chip industry at home. The idea behind the push is to spur private-sector investment to expand domestic production.
