TOKYO -- Japanese chipmaker Rapidus said it aims to deliver semiconductors to customers more than twice as quickly as rivals, as Tokyo bets on the startup with an additional 590 billion yen ($3.89 billion) in subsidies.

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on Tuesday morning that the government had approved subsidies for the chip foundry venture, confirming Nikkei's earlier reports. The latest subsidies bring the total amount of government support to 920 billion yen as it looks to foster domestic manufacturing of advanced semiconductors.
