KUMAMOTO, Japan -- Efforts are underway to ensure water safety in Japan's Kumamoto prefecture, home to a burgeoning chip hub centering on new and planned Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. fabrication facilities, as officials hope to ease residents' fears and secure the expected economic impact of 13.4 trillion yen ($88 billion).
"We are planning a sewage treatment plant that specializes in treating wastewater from semiconductor factories," said Takashi Kimura, governor of the prefecture on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu, explaining the plan to develop a new facility and wastewater pipes in the town of Kikuyo.
