TOKYO -- The Japanese government is planning to exchange Rapidus factories and equipment it owns for shares in the semiconductor manufacturer, Nikkei learned on Thursday.

The assets involve Rapidus' factories and equipment built under a research and development project contract by state-linked New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
