TOKYO -- Government-backed chipmaker Rapidus is confident Japan can catch up with the likes of TSMC and Intel in the race to produce ultra-advanced chips despite the country's semiconductor industry being as much as 20 years behind its rivals.
Rapidus Chairman Tetsuro Higashi, speaking on Wednesday on the first day of the Semicon Japan trade event, said the project in Hokkaido will "surely succeed," thanks in part to rapid shifts in chipmaking technology.
