SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division swung to profit in the second quarter due to strong demand for artificial intelligence chips, as competition to lead the global market for such tech heats up.

The world's biggest memory chipmaker announced on Wednesday that its device solution division logged a 6.5 trillion won ($4.7 billion) operating profit for the three months through June, turning from a 4.4 trillion won operating loss a year ago. The unit's revenue almost doubled to 28.6 trillion won during the same period.
