TAIPEI -- Japan's efforts to lure global chipmakers are bearing fruit as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announces plans to construct a second plant in the country, drawn by generous subsidies and cheaper costs compared with the U.S. and Europe.
The planned factory in Kumamoto prefecture announced Tuesday will produce 6-nanometer chips, the most advanced semiconductors to be made in Japan. Investments in the new plant are expected to surpass those for TSMC's first in Kumamoto.
