TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has withdrawn plans to build a chip plant at a site in northern Taiwan, the company said Tuesday, a move that follows protests from residents.

TSMC had planned to build an advanced chip factory at an industrial park in Taoyuan city. The company did not give a specific reason for the decision. It appears TSMC will build the facility elsewhere in Taiwan.
