Taiwan's No. 2 chipmaker UMC opens $5bn plant in Singapore

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's second-largest chipmaker, United Microelectronics Corp., on Tuesday opened a $5 billion plant that it describes as the "most advanced" in Singapore as the company works to meet customer demand for more diversified production.

The new facility is equipped with UMC's 22-nanometer and 28-nm manufacturing technology, the most advanced contract chipmaking processes in Singapore, and will make premium smartphone display chips, power-efficient memory chips for connected devices and next-generation connectivity chips, the company said. The new plant is adjacent to UMC's existing plant in the city-state.
