TOKYO -- Japanese chip equipment producer Tokyo Electron will open a base in India for designing its chipmaking tools and developing related software, tapping the South Asian country's large, skilled tech workforce.

The move also aligns with India's drive to forge its own semiconductor manufacturing industry, and the new facility could serve as a steppingstone for the establishment of a production plant in the country by Tokyo Electron.
