TAIPEI -- U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Taiwan's most important chip industry leaders in Taipei on Wednesday as part of a lightning trip to the island that has drawn scathing criticism from China.

The visit to Taiwan by the highest-level American official in 25 years comes as the U.S. races to build up its domestic semiconductor industry in its battle with Beijing for tech supremacy.
