HONG KONG -- Amazon is shutting down its AI Lab in Shanghai, the latest U.S. tech giant to retreat from China amid ongoing trade and tech tensions between the world's two largest economies.

"After a thorough review of our organization, our priorities, and what we need to focus on going forward, we've made the difficult business decision to eliminate some roles across particular teams in AWS," said Amazon spokesperson Brad Glasser, referring to Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud computing platform.
