LAS VEGAS -- Amazon has ceased development on the Inferentia artificial intelligence chip to focus on semiconductors for training AI models, a field it believes offers a better avenue for competing against AI chip leader Nvidia.

Since announcing its entry into the AI chip space in 2018, the company's cloud arm, Amazon Web Services (AWS), has developed the Inferentia chip, which is customized for inference predictions, and the Trainium chip for AI model training.
