BEIJING -- The new artificial intelligence model by China's DeepSeek that claims to match OpenAI's model at a fraction of the cost could rewrite the rules of the game.

As news of DeepSeek-R1's capabilities triggered a sell-off in Nvidia and other stocks Monday, Chinese social media platforms were abuzz with excitement over the growing Chinese presence in AI.
