TOKYO -- American semiconductor venture Tenstorrent will launch as early as autumn an AI chip service in Japan that charges users for the amount of data actually processed, reducing costs for artificial intelligence developers and helping to expand the market.

Tenstorrent was founded in 2016 and is led by an engineer who has worked in chip design at Apple and elsewhere. In Japan, it collaborates on technology and human resource development with Rapidus, which aims to mass-produce cutting-edge semiconductor devices. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is an investor.
