DHAKA -- Bangladesh's once booming mobile phone market has hit the skids as manufacturers including Samsung Electronics, Xiaomi and Vivo reduce or calibrate local handset assembly as economic and financial pressures batter the country and force consumers to tighten their belts.

The populous South Asian nation had seen appetite for the devices increase in recent years, with purchases driven by first-time buyers as well as those wanting to upgrade models.
