China and U.S. soar ahead in flying car patent race

Europe out in front in submitting research papers for next-gen mobility

TOKYO -- Either China or the U.S. is well ahead of the other when it comes to patents for flying cars. It all depends on how the applications are counted.

Both countries account for the lion's share of the 1,106 patent applications submitted between 2012 and 2018, according to a report by the Japan Patent Office. Chinese nationals submitted 444 applications compared with 399 from U.S. peers.
