NEW YORK -- When Apple first announced it would enter the electric vehicle race, Elon Musk was dismissive.

"We always jokingly call Apple the 'Tesla Graveyard,'" Tesla's CEO told German newspaper Handelsblatt in 2015. "If you don't make it at Tesla, you go work at Apple."
