TOKYO -- The exit of Marcelo Claure, once Masayoshi Son's right-hand man, from SoftBank Group reflects the telecom industry veteran's diminished presence at a company where tech investment has taken center stage.

Claure stepped down as chief operating officer, effective Thursday, leaving the post vacant. He had been viewed as a potential successor to Son, SoftBank's founder and CEO.
