TOKYO -- Getting packages dropped at doorsteps by drones is close to becoming a reality in Japan after the postal service on Friday flew an unmanned aerial vehicle over a residential area for the delivery.

The Japan Post drone dropped off a small package after landing in front of a house in Okutama, a rural area west of Tokyo, about 2 kilometers away from the post office.
