FUKUSHIMA, Japan -- A series of data centers opening in Fukushima prefecture provides an opportunity to revitalize the disaster-struck region of northeastern Japan by attracting startups involved in artificial intelligence and other digital technology.

Rutilea, an AI startup based in Kyoto, held a ceremony Wednesday for the completion of the first of two planned data centers in Okuma, a town on the Pacific coast that was hit hard by the 2011 tsunami.
