TOKYO -- Japanese metal maker Proterial has developed a production technique that can cut carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10% when making lithium-ion batteries, Nikkei has learned, which promises to make electric vehicles greener overall.

The emissions reduction was achieved by eliminating a chemical process used in the production of nickel material.
