TOKYO -- Japan is set to start a government-backed effort to promote light-based telecommunications technology to U.S. tech giants.

As early as this year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications will support the establishment of a demonstration facility in Silicon Valley. Companies such as Nippon Telegraph and Telephone and tech group Fujitsu are candidates for participation.
