KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia on Wednesday announced a partnership with SoftBank's chip design unit Arm Holdings to establish an ASEAN and Oceania base of operations, marking a significant step in the country's push to move up the semiconductor and artificial intelligence chip supply chains.

The agreement, the first of its kind between U.K.-based Arm and a sovereign nation, is aimed at building a robust intellectual property-driven ecosystem for chips by fostering local innovation and reducing reliance on multinational corporations.
