NEW YORK -- Chinese companies are winning an increasing number of patents in the U.S. despite a broader economic decoupling between the countries and an ongoing trade war.

Aside from American companies, only Japanese companies were awarded more U.S. patents than those from China in 2024, according to a ranking released this month compiled by patent data company IFI Claims Patent Services. China's tally of 28,258 was a 32% increase over 2023, by far the greatest uptick of any country.
